Negotiations Between Tories and Lib Dems Begin
The marathon negotiations between the Tories and Lib Dems have been suspended without concrete results Sunday, but they will resume on Monday to try to resolve the institutional crisis caused by the lack of an absolute majority after the British laws.
The deficit as a priority
Talks between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, launched Friday night, had resumed Sunday afternoon and continued for nearly six hours. They have been “very positive and productive,” he assured William Hague, tipped to lead the British diplomacy in a future Conservative government.
The negotiations will continue “within 24 hours to come,” he said on leaving the meeting. “We had good discussions,” he said, citing among the topics the “deficit reduction” British budget, which is around 12% of Gross Domestic Product.
The Chief of Staff to Nick Clegg, the Liberal leader, Democrat, for his part spoke of a “useful meeting”. “Any agreement will be focused on reducing the deficit,” said Danny Alexander.
Until May 25
Parallel to these negotiations Conservative / Liberal Democrats, Gordon Brown has kept the pressure on the Lib Dems, he courts too. The outgoing Labour Prime Minister, who can keep up until a new government is not able to form, Nick Clegg has met in the afternoon, sources said Labor and Liberal.
The delay in forming the new government might stifle the markets that had already been very feverish Friday. An agreement can technically wait until May 25: The Queen will present to Parliament on that date in the new government and a vote of confidence will take place.
